UK Box office predictions: Will Aladdin or Rocketman sing their way to the top?

UK box office predictions w/c 13th May: How did we do?

We called the top three exactly right! John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum debuted in first (the first in the series to do so!) ahead of Pokémon Detective Pikachu in second, with Avengers: Endgame rounding out the top three.

With poor audience reviews, we thought The Hustle might tumble to fifth with Paw Patrol Mighty Pups pouncing into fourth but The Hustle held on stronger than we expected in fourth, with Paw Patrol Mighty Pups just behind it.

What was a big surprise was that Breakthrough and Beats were both nowhere to be seen, mucking up most of the rest of our predictions (except for Tolkien, which we’d correctly guessed would hold on in tenth). This also allowed A Dog’s Journey and Amazing Grace to stay in the charts for an extra weekend.

What’s happening at the UK Box Office this week?

We’ve found it a huge surprise that two gigantic musicals are up against each other. For the next few weeks and month’s there’s likely to be a great battle in the charts between Rocketman and Aladdin. Will they both thrive or will they eat into each other’s box office?

If we use a similar musical biopic as a benchmark, Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman could be on track to gross nearly 10 million pounds over its first weekend. Picking a benchmark for Aladdin is a bit trickier because of Disney’s mixed fortunes with their cartoon remakes. Dumbo recently grossed 6 million pounds in its opening weekend and using those figures you’d expect Rocketman to come out on top. A better benchmark might be Beauty and the Beast, which made a whopping 19 and a half million pounds. That would suggest that Aladdin would be the clear winner this weekend. We’re saying that Aladdin will probably gross somewhere in-between the two, which would still put it ahead of Rocketman.

Hot on the disco wedge heels of Rocketman will be The Secret Life of Pets 2. As it’s a half term weekend, we can see this doing well. In fact, we think the half term will also give Pokémon Detective Pikachu a boost, possibly enough to push it above John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.
