UK box office predictions January 31st – February 2nd: How did we do?
Our top three predictions were exactly right, with 1917 leading the way followed by Bad Boys For Life and The Personal History Of David Copperfield.
There were a few surprises with A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood underperforming (it debuted in eighth against our prediction of fourth) and the Gentlemen holding strongly in fifth (we’d expected it to slip down to eighth).
Otherwise our predictions were fairly close to the weekend’s results.

What’s happening at the UK Box Office this week?
There are three films opening on over 300 screens this weekend: Underwater, Dolittle, and Birds of Prey And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn.
The Grudge and The Turning both recently struggled to make an impact at the UK box office, so we also see Underwater struggling. Reviews have been lukewarm, with Empire saying that “Underwater finds a few tweaks to the monster play book, but not enough to make it live.”
DoLittle has had terrible reviews, the Independent described it as “flat and hokey’, but it has the advantage of having early previews last week so we see this topping the box office.
Reviews for Birds of Prey And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn have been positive, although not glowing. The Guardian summarised the film by saying that the “mesmerising Margot Robbie returns as the hyperactive supervillain in a crass but weirdly watchable spin-off from Suicide Squad.”
Parasite is also opening on over 100 screens, and we expect this to do well because of its recent BAFTA win (and the rave reviews that it’s been receiving). Reviews have been sensational, with the Metro calling it “brilliant, articulate filmmaking for all audiences”.
