UK Box Office Predictions: What Men Want Is To See Captain Marvel!

UK box office predictions w/c 10th Mar: How did we do?

We’ll be honest, trying to predict last week’s top ten was a nightmare as screenings for all other films were seriously reduced to favour the huge appetite for Captain Marvel. That said, we nailed our predictions last week by correctly calling the top seven films at the UK box office. Excelsior!

Mark Kermode may have said that Captain Marvel wasn’t much more than “fine” and that some jokes were “over laboured”, but it seems that UK audiences have disagreed and have been lapping up the Marvel magic in droves (for the record, we loved it!). The Guardian has gone as far to say that Captain Marvel’s huge success “comes to the rescue of the UK box office”.

Outside of the top seven, we went slightly wrong as it’s looking like The Kid Who Would Be King has longer legs than we originally thought. Despite a poor start, it’s held its position in the top ten better than Alita: Battle Angel (which may now be on its way out of UK cinemas as it suffered quite a big drop in punters!).

What’s happening at the UK Box Office this week?

The biggest two releases at the UK box office this weekend are What Men Want What Men Want and Fisherman’s Friends. For our predictions, we’re giving both the benefit of the doubt and assuming that they’ll be relative successes, but there’s a real chance that both could underperform as they’re surrounded by unusually strong competition.

Regardless, there’s no doubt that Captain Marvel will continue to fill cinema screens across the UK. It made nearly £13 million over the weekend, which isn’t quite as high as 2018’s Black Panther’s £17.7 million debut but it’s still excellent when you bear in mind that there wasn’t advanced previews for Captain Marvel as it opened on a Friday to coincide with International Women’s Day (Black Panther previewed from a Tuesday).
